Rotary International District 6780 Newsletter

Charlotte and I attended our first district conference in 1981, taking our young children with us. As a result of attending that conference and the ones since, we have good friends around our great district whom we look forward to seeing each spring. We anticipate learning about the projects our clubs are using to change their communities and the world. Our conference this spring is special, because it involves Rotarians from four districts, so we will have opportunities to make new friends across Kentucky and Tennessee, opportunities to visit booths from vendors, Rotarian projects, and club projects. We can enjoy meeting and learning the perspectives of President Wilf and Joan Wilkinson, hear about the Future Visions of The Rotary Foundation from its General Manager John Osterlund and Incoming Trustee John Germ, enjoy the fresh musical talent of Ezra Jane. Charlotte and I are looking forward to seeing you at the Music City Sheraton April 18-20 as we Celebrate the Magic of Rotary. Please check www.kytnrotary.org for more information.

MORE WORLD ROTARY DAY CELEBRATIONS

Saturday, February 23rd  was the 103rd birthday of Rotary International. All clubs were asked to conduct a service project in celebration of the event and to use the event to enhance the image of their club and Rotary in their communities. Lamar Advertising donated six billboard spaces around the district for Rotary use. Following are more summaries of what clubs did to celebrate our birthday.

Gatlinburg Puts Cash in Food

Members of the Gatlinburg club collected food items and $1000 to benefit Sevier County Food Ministries, which served an average of 800 families per week in 2007. The happy guy in the red shirt is Al Kusick, a member of the Food Ministries steering committee. The other happy folks are Gatlinburg Rotarians.

Lenoir City Bags Trash

Despite the weather, members of the Lenoir City club picked up the trash along a section of US321. They were going to send a photo, but the camera must have been lost in a bag of trash! By the way, if you'd like to have a load of fun while eating great food, make up at a Lenoir City club meeting at Calhoun's-on-the-Lake!

Sevierville Rotarians Make Goals

Members of the Sevierville and Sevierville Sunrise clubs dealt with the cold, blustery weather on Rotary's birthday by putting new nets on goals, sowing grass seed and planting trees at the Sevierville Soccer Complex, an ongoing project of the two clubs. It appears they even enlisted a future Rotarian in the fun!

Smithville Club Members Lick Labels

The Smithville club has undertaken to provide dictionaries to the Dekalb County High School freshman class and the "English As a Second Language Class." On Rotary's birthday, they placed labels that commemorate the day in the dictionaries, but had to delay the presentations due to illness and weather. We'll get a picture of the presentation and not use the one of label licking!

LEADERSHIP SKILLS TRAINING

We Got Smarter in Murville!

To help develop leadership skills in clubs and the district, DGE Carol LaRue asked Bob Lash (Maryville) to develop a one-day leadership skills course from the work he does as a consultant/trainer/facilitator for his business clients. The 26 students who took advantage of this rare opportunity included four assistant governors, nine current and future committee chairs, seven presidents-elect, three presidents-nominee, a student in the District Leadership Academy, the DGE and DG and a partridge in a pear tree.

If your club is interested in this sort of opportunity, please contact District Trainer Patty Daughtrey (Farragut) at VOLPAT1@aol.com.

ROTARY FOUNDATION NEWS

Matching Grant Approved

The Farragut club has been successful in participating in a second matching grant in less than a year! The new grant involves the Rotary Club of Cesme (Turkey) and the purchase of anesthesia monitoring equipment, which will permit emergency surgeries to be performed in Cesme and avoid transporting hundreds of emergency patients long distances to other hospitals. As the International Partner in this project, the Farragut club is contributing $3013, which is being matched 1:1 from the District Designated Fund and 1.5:1 from the World Fund. The remainder of the $19,045 total is provided by the Host Partner (Cesme) with similar matches from the District 2440 DDF and the World Fund. Our Rotary Foundation donations at work!
