Rotary International District 6780 Newsletter
Monday, February 25, 2008
One attribute of an effective Rotary club is that it prepares members for service beyond the club. Why is that important? Isn't it enough that Rotarians serve their local communities? The reality is that Rotary International does the most for humankind when local clubs work together to build strong local and international programs. For example, our district has strong Interact clubs partly because a district committee works hard to encourage local clubs and plans an excellent Interact Conference for them to attend and share ideas. Similarly with all our excellent  programs.

Without committed Rotarians who volunteer to help our district help our clubs work together to have great programs, they would not be possible. How long since your club has proposed a past-president to attend our excellent District Leadership Academy and take his/her place on our district leadership team? May 1 is the deadline for nominating persons to participate in the 2008-2009 class. Please see the DLA information on our web site and the nomination form.

WORLD ROTARY DAY CELEBRATIONS

This past Saturday was the 103rd birthday of Rotary International. All clubs were asked to conduct a service project in celebration of the event and to use the event to enhance the image of their club and Rotary in their communities. Lamar Advertising donated six billboard spaces around the district.

Bradley Sunrise - Cleveland Habitat for Humanity Build

The two clubs in Bradley County have contributed to and are working on a house! Saturday's build-day was for members of the two clubs and they made progress together. The house is due to be dedicated in May and will provide more Rotarians with work days. For more photos of Saturday's work go to the Bradley Sunrise club's web site album.

The Appalachian Outreach Center began as a home repair ministry by Carson-Newman College and has grown to include a homeless shelter, food distribution, clothing and furniture, an educational program including computers and GED, a thrift store, outreach to the Hispanic population, recycling and counseling. Knox County Clubs Spend Day on Playground!

The seven Knox County clubs planned, donated and worked together to make an $11,000 improvement in the playground at Green Magnet Academy, which overlooks downtown Knoxville. Other contributors to the project included Regions Bank, Rodgers Cadillac, Vulcan Materials, Regas Restaurant and grant funds the school had received. About 60 Rotarians from all the clubs, including AGs Maryellen Duckett and Larry Sheumaker worked together on the windy cold day to produce the results shown here. More photos are available.

Recycling Computers in Morristown

The Morristown and Morristown AM clubs are working together on a new project with Keep America Beautiful to recycle computers. Will Morrison (Morristown) and President-elect Leah Taylor (Morristown AM) show the keyboard of one of 100 systems collected in the first phase Saturday. Of the computers donated, 25 are very functional and 25 more will be assembled from the total to provide computers for persons who need, but cannot afford them. Keep America Beautiful will properly recycle components that cannot be used. Relationships have been established with companies to provide computers as they are retired from their first users.

Oak Ridge Club Ramps Up

The members of the Oak Ridge club have undertaken to build ramps at the homes of disabled persons who cannot afford to have one built. The project combines the efforts of volunteers from Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties and the Atomic Trades and Labor Council and is led by United Way Director and new member Rick Morrow.

Oak Ridge Breakfast Hosts Author

During this year, my home club has been giving autographed copies of the children's book Andy and Elmer's Apple Dumpling Adventure to school classrooms and libraries in recognition of weekly speakers. The club brought author Andy Shoup from Dayton, Ohio, to spend last Friday talking with the classes at Willowbrook Elementary School about his experience as a graphic designer, author and publilsher. Andy was commissioned by the Fairborn Rotary Club (Ohio) to develop the book to teach the Four-Way Test. The author and club members met children and parents all day Saturday at the Public Library.

Sparta Sponsors Auction

Members of the Sparta club donated a furry monkey, rolls of paper towels, picture frames, decorations and a wide variety of items of interest to residents of the National Health Care facility. Play money had been given to the residents over the week preceding the auction held last Saturday, at which member and realtor Barb Witzigman and auctioneer Landon Dickerson entertained the residents as they bid against each other for the prizes. Rotarians helped residents count their money and distributed the prizes.

Rotary Shares

If you didn't find your club listed in the article about World Rotary Day activities, that means I hadn't received information about the activity at the time the memo was sent. The activities planned by the Fairfield Glade and Tullahoma clubs had to be postponed and will be reported later. If your club celebrated through a project, please tell me about it!!!
