Rotary International District 6780 Newsletter Monday, December 3, 2007 |
In most religious and secular traditions, the end of the calendar year is a time of thanksgiving and sharing of fellowship and gifts with those we love. Rotarians also make it a time of sharing of our time and resources with those whom it is our privilege to serve. We hope we all have a safe Holiday Season with enough quiet time to reflect on our many blessings.

New District Web Site in Operation!
Using a design contributed by Tom Ireland (Farragut) and hard work by DGN Bill Martin and Hanna Shapira (Oak Ridge), the district web site has a new name and location. The name change resulted from a license problem with the old name rotary6780.net. Please use your browser to select the new site and add it to your list of favorite sites. As much as possible, the latest news and information about our district and its programs will be found there.
Past issues of these newsletters will be available there shortly. When a login feature is added, contact information will be available so any Rotarian in our district can access up-to-date information that is currently in our district directory and much more.
For many years, our former site has been hosted, designed and managed by Bill Stone (Tullahoma) and Walter Gunne, who works for Bill. All their service was performed at no cost to the district. The Rotarians of our district are indebted to Bill for his excellent support. When you see or talk to Bill, please thank him for his contribution to our district communications.

Ambassadorial Scholars Selected |
|
District to Fund Three Scholars
Three young adults have been selected by the Ambassadorial Scholar Sub-committee of the Rotary Foundation Committee to receive scholarships in the Rotary year 2008-2009. Melissa Lopez (Bradley Sunrise) and Jessica Murphy (Maryville) were selected for academic-year scholarships. Angelo Mangok (Knoxville) was selected for a scholarship that will span two academic years. The funds for these three scholarships will be paid from the District Designated Fund, the half of our donations which our district decides how to spend.
Early next calendar year, the subcommittee will announce the deadlines for nominating candidates for scholarships that will be taken during the 2009-2010 Rotary year.

BANNERS RECOGNIZE SIGNIFICANT FOUNDATION GIVING |
|
Per Capita Giving and 100% Participation Celebrated
Three clubs will receive special banners for their significant per capita giving to the Annual Programs Fund of The Rotary Foundation in 2006-2007. The clubs, with their per capita donations, are North River ($307.57), Farragut ($267.75) and Winchester ($242.68). They will receive banners at upcoming club meetings.
Three clubs contributed at least $100 per member and every club member made a personal contribution. Each club will receive a banner that acknowledges their achievement. The clubs are Knoxville Breakfast, Monteagle and Tullahoma Sunrise.
We appreciate every donation to Our Rotary Foundation and are particularly proud of those clubs that dig deep to fund the eradication of polio, matching grants, Ambassadorial Scholarships, Group Study Exchange, District Simplified Grants, and the other Foundation programs through Annual Giving and the Permanent Fund. |

SPARTA CLUB CELEBRATES 100% PAUL HARRIS FELLOWS |
|
Annual Dinner Recognizes Mitchell as Major Donor
At its annual Christmas Ball on Saturday night, the Sparta club celebrated the addition of 13 new Paul Harris Fellows! In addition, the club recognized Dr. Charles Mitchell (on the right in the photo with President Don Randolph) as a Major Donor to the Foundation. Foundation Chair PDG John Bailey assisted Randolph with the individual recognition and I presented the club banner recognizing the Sparta club for having achieved 100% Paul Harris status through its "Pay It Forward" program.
When you see a member of this club of 40 members, congratulate them on their significant achievement and dedication, and ask them about Pay It Forward. |

OAK RIDGE BREAKFAST FLOATS BLIMP |
|
First Time to Enter Float In Parade
For many years, the Oak Ridge Breakfast Club has provided parade marshals for the city's Christmas Parade. This year the club built a float with "Books in Toyland" as its theme. More than 40 Rotarians and family members were involved in the development of the float, the blimp in the photo, attending the float and blimp, and serving as marshals. Candy and more than 125 donated books were given to children along the parade route. The club members involved had a great time and are committed to giving away more books next year.

Rotary Shares -- Wear your Rotary pin today!
If your wear your Rotary pin, one of the following might happen: -- Someone might ask you what it signifies, giving you an opportunity to share Rotary with him/her
-- Someone might introduce himself/herself to you as a Rotarian, and you'll make a new Rotary friend
-- Someone might recognize you as a person who lives by the Four Way Test.
On the other hand, the worst that could happen is that you lose a pin you can replace.
